COMMENT : The "European
Premier League", written
November 2020,
Hello, and welcome to
StraightRed.com, a new website
with a new and fresh take on the
world's greatest sport, football!
We hope you'll enjoy. So, without
further ado, to our first comment
piece...
So, talk of a "European Super
League" or a "European Premier
League" is back again. You have to
sometimes wonder if these stories
are legitimate, or it's just the
sports editors of national
newspapers just reviving the
perennial story to create some
column inches on a slow news day.
But you know what? Real or fake,
it always works, as social media
always fills with irate fans. And
who can blame them?
Because it's all about money, of
course. A European Super League
would generate huge revenues,
particularly TV revenues for
already very rich clubs, while at
the same time reducing the cash
available to clubs in the lower
national leagues of each European
nation involved, who are of course
already struggling due to the
Covid crisis.
Bayern Munich v Manchester United
or Liverpool v Barcelona will
always be a huge draw, of course.
But as the old adage goes, "if it
ain't broke, why fix it?" Such
matches are already there in the
Champions League. The big clubs
have to qualify for the Champions
League in the first place, of
course, and maybe that's what this
is about more than anything else.
The big clubs want that guaranteed
revenue, they want to rest on
their laurels and see that
guaranteed cash come rolling in
each year, without the financial
risks and occasional random blips
of qualification.
But would that make for a better
football? Doubtful.
I say again, if it ain't broke,
why fix it? Right now, we get the
best of worlds, particularly in
England, or if you're a fan of
English football around the world.
We get competitive, exciting
games, any team can beat another
on the day. Arguably it's the most
competitive league in the
world...actually it IS the most
competitive league in the world.
The games are fast and very
watchable, and although you might
get the occasional stinker, the
quality is high, and for that
reason, the Premiership is also
the most watched soccer league in
the world. And of course, if you
want European football, and want
to see the biggest clubs in the
world play, you get that too, with
the Champions League, but the
point is, teams have to earn their
place to play in Europe, and they
can't guarantee that revenue. If
you want to watch the best
football, that's entirely how it
should be, and exactly how you
want it.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
